In their large size and narrative allusions, his works follow the tradition of classical history painting. However, Benedict takes it farther, using other means: he does not present his work as the pivotal moment of a narrative, as classical visual theory demands, but rather as the culmination of a narrative clearly lodged in the past. He uses the principles of allegorical visual language, in wich all the elements are an analogy, refering to something beyond themselves. The people portrayed in his paintings, therefore, are given props and settings with similary classical attributes and hence a symbolic character. Yet the viewer is not able to decipher them immediately and reamains mystified. I målningen Som att skriva på vatten, 2012, vibrerar den röda skriften på duken på ett för betraktaren främmande sätt eftersom budskapet förskjuts en aning då duken också fungerar som en högtalare för just den handling som står att läsa på den. Inom Buddhismen sägs det finnas tre typer av personer: en är som att rista i sten, en annan är som att rita i sand och den tredje typen är som att skriva på vatten. Denna metafor speglar på en gång det futtiga i vår existens och måleriets konstnärligt, inneboende idé att göra motstånd mot denna förgänglighet genom att finnas kvar långt efter att upphovsmannen blir till stoft. Den röda färgen i Som att skriva på vatten lyser som stelnade ådror mot det vita tomrummet och Hjelms andliga temperament tvingar oss genom denna sammanställnig av ytterligheter att ifrågasätta själva idén om det absoluta i måleriet. Leonardo skrev i en av sina anteckningsböcker att ”måleriet är den yttersta konstformen”, just eftersom den är så mycket mer beständig är andra konstnärliga tekniker. Om man, enligt Da Vinci, applicerar glasfärg på en kopparplåt kommer färgen i princip vara kvar tills tidens ände. Varför har Mats Hjelm gått från att arbeta med det flyktiga filmmediet till måleriets traditionstunga materialitet? Kanske just för att påminna om måleriets historia av transcendens av det profana, dess immaterialitet. I de övriga målningarna har en sorts patina skapats genom lager-på-lager måleri och speciella blandningar av både målarmedium, gesso och färgpigment. Det finns andliga underlag även i dessa målningar; i Havet, 2012, syns det monumentala korset från Asplunds och Lewerentz Skogskyrkågården helt i vitt, med blicken uppåt skyn. I målningen Idag tar syret slut, 2012, syns samtliga grundfärger applicerade, men på ett sätt som snarare skapar mörker och odefinierbarhet. Texten är hämtad från en rubrik om den ryska atomubåten Kursk som år 2000 havererade på botten av Barents hav och som av ryska myndigheter betraktades som förlorad trots att uppgifter påvisade att besättningen levde. Syret skulle bara räcka ett antal dagar, därefter var det omöjligt att veta om männen ombord levde eller inte. Känslan av att betrakta sina medmänniskor i gränslandet mellan liv och död är förstelnande och tvingar oss att nästan vandra utanför oss själva för förhindra vansinne. Precis som den teoretiska idén om Schrödingers katt tvingar vårt medvetande att tänka bortom det absoluta och fasta mot en kvantfysisk värld, blir denna målning en påminnelse om ett slags moralisk Monitor A series of nine paintings: The Artist and Corpses 1-8 with oil on MDF, which was exhibited in ”Konst runt Möckeln” in Karlskoga and Degerfors. Corpses 1-8, eight paintings of civilian corpses in Iraq that I painted as they appeared on my broken computer screen. The computer screen shows the same information as a functioning computer screen, but it redistributes the information to stripes. The paintings, which are painted in 1:1, was raffled to persons with relevant links to Karlskoga on the 12th of December. The artist is painted from the same screen, but instead based upon a photograph of myself. This work revolves around the problems of my own upbringing in Karlskoga, a city in which Bofors is the largest industry. Bofors, and thus also Sweden, is a major arms exporter. Today USA is the 3rd top purchaser of Swedish weapons and these weapons are used in the war in Iraq. The crafts ability to communicate, as well as emphasize on the skill that lays beneath the works of art makes them into artworks. There is a beauty and tension between the attractive and dissociation that contemporary art and then especially craftsmanship can take and use in its idiom as well as choice of material. Per´s choice of material, technique and color gives us a perfect example of how traditional crafts can receive a new expression and context in the modern world. The embroideries differs largely in texture, technique and color density, these differences are important in the process of producing the needle point works. The handmade pictures arrives from video game stills where composition, narrative and memory plays its role. The gaming industry is still in its youth though very soon to become the dominating genre in popular culture. Video games has quickly created its own subculture and codes, this very much in relation to the fast growing industry and especially to people born during the 70:s who grew up with the first generation of consoles 25 years ago, as Nintendo NES, Commodore 64 and Sega Megadrive. The combination of technical progress parallel with cultural baggage is an interesting socio economical aspect for understanding the work of Per Fhager. Per creates something permanent from a transient movement. Stitched stills from digital fantasy worlds also relates to the historical genre of naturalistic and romantic paintings from the 1900 century. It´s beautiful and intriguing, at the same time as we almost experience the expression as superficial and shallow. Though we know that both Markus Larsson, Robert Zünd and their fellow collegues today are important figures that represent a time very often forgotten. A time when nature and nostalgia may played a different role than today. Per Fhager helps us to recapture this feeling in a new time with a different language. The human blind spot is essential for her inspiration and ongoing social exploration. With integrity and silence she lures into areas in our everyday life that are right there, but at the same time so far away. Her expression is both powerful and subtle. The canvases depict people or environments on the border lands of existence. It is hardly social indignation that one experiences at first encounter with these pictures, but rather a world void of all other meaning than existence itself, darkness and light intertwining. The "note" is the deepest ever detected from any object in our Universe. The tremendous amounts of energy carried by these sound waves may solve a longstanding problem in astrophysics. The black hole resides in the Perseus cluster of galaxies located 250 million light years from Earth. In 2002, astronomers obtained a deep Chandra observation that shows ripples in the gas filling the cluster. These ripples are evidence for sound waves that have traveled hundreds of thousands of light years away from the cluster's central black hole. Earlier observations had revealed the prodigious amounts of light and heat created by black holes. "The Perseus sound waves are much more than just an interesting form of black hole acoustics," says Steve Allen, also of the Institute of Astronomy and a co-investigator in the research. "These sound waves may be the key in figuring out how galaxy clusters, the largest structures in the Universe, grow.
