installation views- Stene Projects 4_o.jpg" align="left" /> Monitor A series of nine paintings: The Artist and Corpses 1-8 with oil on MDF, which was exhibited in ”Konst runt Möckeln” in Karlskoga and Degerfors. Corpses 1-8, eight paintings of civilian corpses in Iraq that I painted as they appeared on my broken computer screen. The computer screen shows the same information as a functioning computer screen, but it redistributes the information to stripes. The paintings, which are painted in 1:1, was raffled to persons with relevant links to Karlskoga on the 12th of December. The artist is painted from the same screen, but instead based upon a photograph of myself. This work revolves around the problems of my own upbringing in Karlskoga, a city in which Bofors is the largest industry. Bofors, and thus also Sweden, is a major arms exporter. Today USA is the 3rd top purchaser of Swedish weapons and these weapons are used in the war in Iraq. For me, they all connote the profound engagement with materials and process that is central to creativity. Through this engagement form, function, and meaning are made tangible. It is time to move beyond the limitations of terminologies that fragment and separate our appreciation of creative actions, and consider the "behaviors of making" that practitioners share. / David Revere McFadden, Chief Curator, Museum of Arts & Design, NY Introduction Crafts has taken a predominate role in the perspicuous world of art. The crafts ability to communicate, as well as emphasize on the skill that lays beneath the works of art makes them into artworks. There is a beauty and tension between the attractive and dissociation that contemporary art and then especially craftsmanship can take and use in its idiom as well as choice of material. Per´s choice of material, technique and color gives us a perfect example of how traditional crafts can receive a new expression and context in the modern world. The embroideries differs largely in texture, technique and color density, these differences are important in the process of producing the needle point works. The handmade pictures arrives from video game stills where composition, narrative and memory plays its role. The gaming industry is still in its youth though very soon to become the dominating genre in popular culture. Video games has quickly created its own subculture and codes, this very much in relation to the fast growing industry and especially to people born during the 70:s who grew up with the first generation of consoles 25 years ago, as Nintendo NES, Commodore 64 and Sega Megadrive. The combination of technical progress parallel with cultural baggage is an interesting socio economical aspect for understanding the work of Per Fhager. Per creates something permanent from a transient movement. Stitched stills from digital fantasy worlds also relates to the historical genre of naturalistic and romantic paintings from the 1900 century. It´s beautiful and intriguing, at the same time as we almost experience the expression as superficial and shallow. Though we know that both Markus Larsson, Robert Zünd and their fellow collegues today are important figures that represent a time very often forgotten. A time when nature and nostalgia may played a different role than today. Per Fhager helps us to recapture this feeling in a new time with a different language. The "note" is the deepest ever detected from any object in our Universe. The tremendous amounts of energy carried by these sound waves may solve a longstanding problem in astrophysics. The black hole resides in the Perseus cluster of galaxies located 250 million light years from Earth. In 2002, astronomers obtained a deep Chandra observation that shows ripples in the gas filling the cluster. These ripples are evidence for sound waves that have traveled hundreds of thousands of light years away from the cluster's central black hole. Earlier observations had revealed the prodigious amounts of light and heat created by black holes. "The Perseus sound waves are much more than just an interesting form of black hole acoustics," says Steve Allen, also of the Institute of Astronomy and a co-investigator in the research. may look like paintings or photographs of paintings. The worlds of Quattrocento, Uccello or Baroque masters seem familiar. But the process of production is much more complex than the first glance may hint at. What we are seeing starts with minute collage work made by hand. Reproductions from art books have been cut up and laboriously pieced together to form startling new pictures. This is post-production art history. Based on close observation and analysis of the originals. This may be seductive. But there is nothing pleasantly seductive about the contents of Wizén’s images, fraught with different, violent and troubling relations as they are, and the technique he uses to achieve them resembles that of sampling in much of contemporary music. Suzannah Sinclair borrows images from vintage men´s magazines of the 1970s for her watercolor paintings on birch panels. She is, in her way, reclaiming the centerfold. She paints nude women, stereotypically reclining on the grass or cavorting in front of a mirror. What´s different is in the women´s eyes. They don´t have the quasi-confrontational come-hither gaze of the Playboy centerfold. Rather, they appear to have an inner life. It´s intentionally hard to tell what´s going on with them emotionally. The paintings are gorgeously crafted. The transparent watercolor reveals the wood grain beneath, suggesting that these images are just shimmers, here and gone, passing as quickly as a desire sated. Sinclair imbues her work with a vivid push-pull effect, deploying strategies of objectification even as she recovers some of her subjects subjectivity. Clearly, this artist loves beauty, but as she revels in it with her forms and materials, she also questions its costs.
